MUSES: Isabel Marant
The Isabel Marant FW12 Show - I could watch it over and over and over. Sleek, simple, sexy, real clothes - so wearable. Everything meant to be worn with no makeup, definitely no earrings, and dirty hair that you've maybe combed your fingers through. A mix of both Patsy Cline western shirts and super slim Emmanuelle Alt trousers, that Isabel Marant blend of slouchy femininity while endlessly copied, is a testament to chic simplicity.
"... I don’t like it when things are perfect; I like imperfection. I like sexiness. I like the fragility of a woman, but I like a strong woman at the same time. I think I try to put those two ideas together. The attitude of what I make is very difficult for me to describe—it’s really me.... actually I quite like simple things.."
"You know, I was a real tomboy when I was younger.... I started to do my own outfits....I was cutting into my father’s old sweaters and things like that..... I was always dressed in a quite freaky and silly way in school, but some of my friends quite liked it and asked me to do some clothes for them. ...After a while there were so many requests that I had to make them pay, because I had to buy fabrics and things like that. I found out at the age of 16 that I was kind of earning my life by sewing clothes for my friends...."
"....I’m quite fed-up with clothes ... For me, it’s very important to have the right cut, because that’s what gives you attitude. Most of the time, I’m always dressed up in the same thing because during the day I change my clothes maybe ten times. Today, my team said, ‘Isabel, you cannot go to the show with a sweatshirt and those trousers.’ I don’t really care about what I’m wearing; I just pick the first things on the top of the pile.....I rarely wear makeup. Today, the day of the show, I did. Sometimes I put a red lipstick on when I don’t have a good tan because it makes me brighter and otherwise I would look grey. I like really red. I quite like Yves Saint Laurent’s red lipsticks—the packaging is very sexy."
"....I’ve always loved the most natural women; I’m not very into hiding yourself. I’m always asked about what I would recommend, or what a girl should do—but it doesn’t work like that. ......When somebody tries to be somebody else and looks too much to the newspaper or wants to resemble a certain girl, it will be a failure because you are not this girl....."
"...When you see people that are self-confident, they radiate something good. When you look at iconic people, most of the time they are dressed up exactly the same way for all their life. For example, my icons would be Serge Gainsbourg or Jane Birkin…or Françoise Hardy or Diana Vreeland. I mean, all their lives, they were dressed the same way and wore almost the same thing.... or women like Brigitte Bardot. They were dressing up in a very simple way while having their own attitude, something quite elegant about themselves, while remaining quite simple and casual...... If a French girl has to go out, she is going to start by dressing up, then at the last minute, she’s going to grab the old jeans that she was wearing all day and say, Fuck it! I feel more like this. That's really what my clothes are all about."
